"Should we build our own AI or buy a ready-made one?"

For most companies, the answer is simpler than you think. Buy first and build later, if the need still exists.

Building it yourself sounds tempting, because a tailored solution should surely beat a "standard product", shouldn't it?
In practice, it means development, integrations, data security, and maintenance. And the market moves so fast that the solution can be outdated before the investment pays off.

For most, AI is not about revolutionising the business. It is about saving time on tasks that already take up resources, and increasing the quality of the output. The gain is concrete and measurable immediately, whereas the grand transformation often remains just a promise.

The exception is companies without a heavy legacy of systems and processes. The less you have built up, the easier it is to build AI into the foundation rather than gluing it on top. But for most established companies, the rule is: Start with time savings and productivity.
